At the team meeting there were a few other people, (myself included), who expressed some interest in doing a few road races this year.
Maybe now would be a good time to talk about which ones would be best attended. I obviously have no aspirations of road glory, but I'd get a kick out of running a paceline to help some of you skinny riders get closer to the front.
Discuss.

Ok boyz, I am just thinking ahead a little to next year. As soon as this damn ankle heals, training time begins.

Since I could not ride with the fast people who were putting on some good long miles, I had to roll out by myself Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Saturday warranted almost 70 degree temps and wind....LOTS OF WIND! I had it in my mind just to do the bare essentials and just get in the typical 20 mile loop around town. So I got kitted up; sporting the Team Red Wheel Jersey and some light arm warmers and headed out.
Starting off I felt great! I headed from my house up route C and was just cruzing, not really working hard at all. I started to think...."Maybe I am in a little better shape than I thought." I even made a valant effort to sprint for the city limit sign. When I looked down at the cyclometer at the sign I had 37.6 on it. WOW...could I really go that fast? My legs were saying "Thank GOD we are spinning again" so I pushed on. I decided that since I was feeling good I would head over to Eastland and then cruz up by Riverside park. When I got to riverside I decided to climb the hill a few times and again....felt great. The heart rate was low and the legs were feeling into it. I then made my way downtown and decided to do the crit course 4 times. I thought I could just cruz around there with no problems and then make my way west. Well, it turns out that traffic was heavy and there was a lot of speeding up and slowing down and passing cars and yelling at A**HOLES who walk across the street right in front of you and don't move while you come inches from running into them and they just look at you like...What? This is a street you know...
Anywhozer...
I made it through that inscaved and headed west...into the wind. OH CRAP! THE WIND! I had forgotten about how windy it was as it was blowing at my back most of the way out. I checked my legs and heart rate and we were still looking good, so I pressed on. I got to the mall and had to make a decision...head home or head out by Binder. Binder it was. :-)
Cruzed down the hill past binder and made the grueling climb up the other side. When I turned onto bus. 50 I was pretty much gassed. The wind had taken its toll and I was plum out of energy. I rolled down to Old Lohman Rd and knew I had to keep pressing. So I made one last attempt to hurt myself and sprinted for the city limit sign again. 34.8 that time and that one hurt bad. Checked the heart rate and it was 182. Ouch... I kicked it into a nice spinning gear and cruzed home. 31.7 all in all.
Sunday warranted 50's and some wind.
I got kitted up and headed out toward Russellville. I thought about taking route C the whole way, but did not feel like having cars rush by me going 65-70. So I took the back roads and wound around C till I got to the gas station. I then had to bear C for a few miles till I got to old route C. The legs were feeling ok, but feeling Saturdays ride a bit. I still wanted to get some miles in so I pressed on.
When I got to route U I decided to take it and headed toward the huge town of Lohman. This is the first time I had ever done this backwards and wasn't really sure which turn to take back into Lohman. Needless to say I missed the turn and rode 2-3 miles before I thought..."This does not look right". So I turned around and found the road. WOW was that wind cold too! I did not put any shoe covers on and my feet were Frozen! I rolled till I hit Old Lohman Rd. again and again...sprinted for the city limit sign. Not sure what the speed was yesterday, but I know it felt dramatically slower then the previous day. Probably in the mid to upper 20's. Those hills over by Lohman are killer! At one point I was unsure if I was going to make it up or not. I did but it hurt a lot.
Once I was done with the sprint I kicked it into a spinning gear and headed for home. This was probably not the best ride to do after Saturday's events, but F**K it. I wanted to get some miles in and did not want to do the "Loop" again. I made it through and the legs are tired today, but that is what it is all about. No sacrafice so victory!

Jeff Yielding is at it again. Anyone who raced in either of the 2 cross races he put on this year knows that he does things first class. I've never done a road race/TT/crit before, but I'm up for it if anyone else wants to play.

For those of you who don't know, Red Wheel Bike Shop DID have a team this past year in the MS150. Though a lot of the "normal" riders did not ride this past year, I would like to change that for 2009.
Last night was the awards banquet held at Boone Tavern in Columbia, and I was lucky enough to attend. Apparently last year there was a big push to get new teams and more riders to ride the MS150 from the Central Missouri area. The winning team was out of Columbia with only 15 riders on it. The Red Wheel team had a total of 10 riders. I know we can be the leading team this next year.
For those who would like to sign up the ride is September 12th and 13th at Midway. Right now through December 11th the entry fee is just $15 and then it goes up to $25.
Lets make Red Wheel Bike Shop the leading team this year in the MS150.

I guess with the race being canceled, that leads us into this. Come out and join us for the Eldon ride on Sunday, August 17th @ 8:00 am. We will meet at the Eldon Middle School and do a 40 some mile loop. This will be a SAG supported ride, so bring all who can pedal a bike.
Afterwards we can relax and unwind at the Silver Saddle!Posted by Robby on July 25, 2008 at 08:22 PM in Road Rides | Permalink | Comments (5)
